Residents of Balkanabat were shocked to see cats and dogs being actively exterminated in the streets of their city. Animal corpses are taken to the city dump, where they rot in open air, spreading the reek of decomposition all around.
The reason for this extermination campaign was the arrival of the President Berdymuhamedov. On February 17, he participated in the opening ceremony of elite houses. On account of president’s, the city’s authorities made sure the city was cleaned-up, especially the streets where the president’s motorcade was expected to pass, and the districts, which were to host the celebrations. Animals found in the streets, or pets who simply happened to run out of their homes, are subject to immediate extermination, often by methods of extreme cruelty.
According to ATN’s readers from Turkmenbashi (formerly Krasnovodsk), a similar brutal campaign of pet killings recently took place in their city. The head of state came there to inspect the progress of construction of a new international port on the Caspian Sea.
The practice of cat and dog extermination before his arrival emerged after a dog frightened by the loud noise of the vehicles ran out in front of the presidential motorcade in Dashoguz. Since then, the authorities have been clearing cities and villages of any animals roaming the streets, in order to prevent something like this from happening again.
